Want to Lose the Belly Fat? Here's How!

Hell yea!! Who doesn't? There is nothing more un-fabulous than a muffin top peering over the edge of a cute pair of shorts or bikini bottoms! It's not only unsightly, it's also really unhealthy. Lurking under that layer of skin is fat that we don't need, don't want, and need to stop feeding!

But how? And why now?

The why is easy: the longest day of the year just passed which means summer is officially here, and we need to get beach ready ladies!

The how... weeeeeeellllll, that requires a little more thought, and quite a bit more effort but I know you're up for it, so let's get busy!

Here are my suggestions, which I think we should all put into practice ASAP. Not only will our bellies be forever grateful when the sun finally gets to shine on them, (they've been in the dark for soooo long!), but our minds will be much less focused on them, and way more focused on having a fun, carefree, enjoyable summer. I want to spend my time focusing on the good, not the un-fabulous! So belly up ladies, I've got solutions!

Step 1. Quit it with the sugar. Let it goooooooo. You don't need it as much as you think you do. Sugar is a combo of glucose and fructose. In a nut shell, glucose is used as fuel for the body, and gets processed like many other foods through your digestive system. Fructose is a little different in that it gets digested by the liver. And when the body is inundated with too much fructose, the excess is turned into fat. Not good my dear. Not good for your liver and not good for your waistline. (This is why high fructose corn syrup is a bad boy!)

Now I know that going cold turkey on sugar is a toughy for many and I can totally relate. I'm a chocoholic, but I know that what's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander. (i.e my brain thinks it's sooooo goooooood, but my belly knows better!) Now, truth be told, I'm not planning on giving up this gift from the Gods forever, but when it comes to summer and me wanting to feel fab, chocolate is out. It's not doing me any favors when I'm out on the boat so it's gotta go! Whatever your treat may be, understand that it needs to be reigned in for a little bit until things get under control.

We also need to be on high alert when reading ingredient labels because sugar lurks in places unexpected. And, they have many aliases. Many! So get to know the names (typically if an ingredient ends in -ose you can be pretty darn certain it's a sugar), and put down anything that seems suspicious, for it can derail even the best of intentions!

If you really think it's going to be too difficult to give up, think again, please! There are so many options out there when it comes to satisfying a sweet tooth craving that quitting sugar has never been easier. It's summer and the time is right for fresh berries picked at their peak that are juicy, flavorful, and downright delicious. This is the time of year to give up anything boxed, canned, or packaged and hit up your local farmer's market to get local, fresh fruits and produce. Take advantage!

Step 2. Eat quality protein at every meal. If you know me, you know I say this allllllllll the time! I'm seriously a broken record of protein endorsement. Want to quell a craving? Eat protein. Want to feel fuller longer? Eat protein. Want to tone up those muscles and change your body? Eat protein. Good, quality lean meats, organic and well sourced tofu and soy products, and beans and legumes are all good choices. And don't feel the need to over do it with the protein. Try adding in some at every meal, don't believe the marketing hype on every protein bar, and get about 25 - 30% of you daily calories from protein.

Step 3. Can we all just eat more fiber! Fiber is good for you and it's good for your gut. Your gut is the motherboard of life! If it's not performing well, you will feel it. Somehow, someway, and somewhere it will manifest in your body and you won't like it. It may be small, or it may be a full-blown inflammatory attack!

Think of fiber as indigestible plant matter that makes its way through your system, helping to move things along, and uniting forces with the good bacteria to create usable energy. It's considered to be a prebiotic, and beneficial when it comes to weight loss. You gotta get on the fiber train if you're looking to improve your health, and create a happy environment in your gut! (and want to lose belly fat!!)

Foods that are good for upping your fiber intake are raspberries, blackberries, avocados, oats, almonds, walnuts, beans, legumes, broccoli, apples, pears and a slew of other yummy foods you can easily find at your local farmer's market #farmersmarketpusher :) Think real, whole foods and you're well on your way to creating a fiber-rich belly!

Losing the belly fat means making a few healthy dietary changes, and I can tell you from experience, these changes really work! And notice I didn't say do 100 crunches a day. Nope, that will not do it my friend. Changing up your eating habits will make all the difference. Remember, it's 80% food, 20% exercise.

There are many more ways in which you can work on losing the belly fat but I really think this is a great place to start out. Let me know what you think! Is this doable?! Can you make the changes in order to see the difference?! Can I get a Hell yea!
